Tips for Setting New Year’s Resolutions at Work

It’s the new year and that means it’s time to make your New Year’s Resolutions! We aren’t here to talk about you personal life of fitness goals, but rather those goals you can set to help you excel in your career. We all know we make resolutions each year in the expectation to improve ourselves or to achieve a goal, and this year that should include your work growth too. If you do not know where to start, here are a couple resolutions to inspire your own:

Learn a New Skill

One of the best ways to strengthen your resume and expand your knowledge is through learning a new skill. First, you want to identify something that applies to your current position, industry or even and industry you are looking to break into. Learning a new skill or gaining a certification can not only help you in your current role, but also it can make it easier for you to advance your career. Once you’ve identified what you want to learn, your education might be just a click away! Many platforms now offer courses for users to take that will enhance their work life. The scale to learn new things is endless on any of these platforms. If you are looking to grow a more hand-on skill, many libraries offer free courses and your current employer may even offer reimbursements for courses and certification classes.

Clean out you Workspace

As the year goes on, we all accumulate things in our office that we don’t even remember what it was needed for or where it came from. Take the time in January to clean out your workspace. Start with cleaning out your file folders and tossing anything that no longer is of value to your company. Whether it is paper files or digital files cleaning out your workspace will get you ready and organized for the year that is to come. According to data by the International Data Corporation, searching for lost documents equates to businesses losing around $2.5 million in lack of productivity! If you aren’t the most organized person this is the perfect time of the year to get organized and start your year off right!

Expand your Network

The New Year is a great time to expand your professional network! Find new networking events in your area to be a part of this year. You can never have too many connections. It is always a great idea to network with individuals outside of your industry as you may never know when their expertise will come in handy. Networking doesn’t just mean finding new people to connect with online. It can be as simple as following a new influencer or blog that is doing something interesting within your field. Whether it be online or at an event, making a dedicated effort to make genuine connections in your area and industry will open opportunities you may not have had otherwise.
